Energy – electricity and heat – will always be needed. Graduate engineers in sustainable energy technology will ensure the safe, economical and sustainable production of electricity and heat as well as the development of related technologies.
There are roughly three scenarios for the development of future energy solutions: renewable energy sources (hydro, solar, wind, wave and bioenergy), safe nuclear power, and carbon capture and use. These represent the core of energy engineering. By studying energy technology, you will build a career in pioneering technologies. Energy technology is suitable for those interested in technology who want to utilise mathematics and natural sciences as tools.
This programme focuses on the most efficient, environmentally friendly production and distribution of a basic element in our daily well-being: energy and its related technologies.
The main themes of the studies are the efficient production and use of energy and environmental friendliness. Your training will be based on three key areas of expertise in energy technology: physical phenomena related to energy technology, such as policies that affect the shape and magnitude of energy; energy conversion from one form to another; and machinery and equipment for energy conversion.
At LUT University, energy technology research and training are based on strong expertise in power plant technology and energy management. We also offer unique nuclear engineering training with a focus on nuclear safety. The emphases of our degree programme have been selected on the basis of the skills required in the working world.
The Bachelor's Programme in Energy Technology is a unique, international double degree programme developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. Students admitted to the Bachelor's Programme in Energy Technology at LUT University will receive a degree certificate from two universities after they have fulfilled the degree requirements of both universities. You will complete the entire degree in Lahti, Finland.
After completing a bachelor's degree in energy technology, you can continue your studies directly in the Master's programmes at LUT in the field of energy technology:

In your studies, you will become familiar with the production, transmission, distribution and use of energy.
You will get comprehensive basic information about energy production methods, such as solar, wind and thermal technologies, as well as their operation and safety.
Your education will combine technology and science - mathematics, physics and chemistry. You will learn to master the techniques associated with energy production and apply them to problem-solving. You will learn to convert natural energy resources such as water, wind or biomass into sustainable energy for human consumption as efficiently as possible.
By the end of the programme, you will be able to apply basic equations of thermal engineering in the examination of energy conversion processes and describe the structure and operation of energy technology equipment (boilers, turbines, compressors, fans, heat exchangers).
You will be able to calculate operating values of equipment, define their design values, and understand their design principles. You will also be able to compare the applicability of various energy conversion processes to different applications from technological, economic and environmental perspectives.
The main programme's themes are energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. In the transition to fully renewable energy production, nuclear power and, above all, nuclear safety will play an important role. Studies in nuclear safety in Finland are only available at LUT University.
The Bachelor's Programme in Energy Technology is a three-year double degree programme. The programme is developed in cooperation with Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) in China. The programme leads to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 180 ECTS credits.
The programme includes general, intermediate specialisation, minor, language and elective studies as well as a Bachelor's thesis at the end of the studies. You will complete the entire degree in Lahti, Finland.
General studies (77 ECTS credits) include studies in mathematics, physics, engineering design, mechanics, control systems, programming and electricity.
Intermediate specialisation studies (51 ECTS credits) focus on the topics in thermodynamics, heat transfer, nuclear power engineering, power plant engineering and energy economics.
Options for minor studies (20 ECTS credits) include energy economics; sustainability science; practical engineering; innovation and entrepreneurship; and Chinese business, culture and technology.
Language studies (19 ECTS credits) include Chinese, Finnish and English and are featured with the aim to increase intercultural communication abilities as well as employability in Finland, China and around the world.
In elective studies (3 ECTS credits), you can select any course at LUT.

After completing a bachelor's degree in energy technology, you can continue your studies directly in the Master's programmes in energy technology at LUT: Bioenergy Systems, Energy Conversion or Nuclear Engineering.
During your studies, you will become acquainted with phenomena related to heat, heat transfer, liquid and gas flows, power plant technology and its safe operation, and environmentally friendly energy production and distribution systems. You will also become familiar with the energy business.
You will be able to look at the use of different forms of energy in, for example, energy production, heating, transport and industry. You will learn to understand how much energy is produced, distributed and used and how emissions are generated and controlled. You will get a comprehensive overview of how energy resources are used.
Your studies will consist of theory lectures, calculation exercises, company visits, and projects conducted independently and in groups. Exercises and projects will prepare you to apply your knowledge and skills to practical work and take responsibility for professional tasks. They also support the development of your teamwork and presentation skills.
In addition to lectures and assignments, your studies will include a great deal of laboratory work: you will learn to measure and analyse temperatures, pressure, thermal conductivity and radiation, among other things, and apply them to energy production. At the same time, you will also practice your reporting skills.
The programme collaborates with the working world: it invites visiting lecturers and arranges projects together with companies in the area. The teaching staff also has strong practical knowledge related to the industry.
Students from other degree programmes are often involved in projects and other assignments. Interdisciplinary studies increase interaction between different fields and encourage you to take different perspectives into account and find new types of solutions.
Graduate engineers in energy technology are needed for well-paid jobs to take care of safe, economical and low-emission energy production.
Energy is always needed, whether it is a recession or a boom, so there is a need for experts in the field now and in the future.
Extensive knowledge of the energy industry is a trademark of LUT University graduate engineers. They are mainly employed in development, operation and management positions in the energy industry and production and in research and consulting positions.
Work tasks are often related to energy economics, the environmental impact of energy production, emission mitigation, renewable energy sources, the construction and safety of nuclear energy, and the operation and control of power plants.

How to Apply
The next application period is 7 January − 20 January 2021 at 15:00 (UTC+2).
There are 2 different paths to follow when applying:
- Applying with an SAT Test
Holders of any other comparable qualification on the upper secondary level of education providing you with eligibility to University-level Bachelor's studies in the country where the degree was completed in.
No language test required.
- Applying with Finnish Matriculation Examination or related results
Holders of Finnish Matriculation Examination, International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate or Reifeprüfung.
Language Test required with a few exceptions to the rule.
LUT University's Lahti campus is located in the district of Niemi, three kilometres from the Lahti city centre. The campus is smaller than the campus in Lappeenranta and at the moment, student services on the Lappeenranta campus offer study and guidance services for students studying on the Lahti Campus. However, starting from autumn 2020 some study services will be available also on the Lahti campus for students studying in LUT Master's programmes in Lahti.
